The CSR about a company

Corporate social responsibility (CSR, also called corporate sustainability, sustainable business, corporate consciencecorporate citizenship, conscious capitalism, or responsible business)[1][2][3] is a type of international private business self-regulation.[4] While once it was possible to describe CSR as an internal organisational policy or a corporate ethic strategy,[5] that time has passed as various international laws have been developed and various organisations have used their authority to push it beyond individual or even industry-wide initiatives. While it has been considered a form of corporate self-regulation[6] for some time, over the last decade or so it has moved considerably from voluntary decisions at the level of individual organisations, to mandatory schemes at regional, national and even transnational levels.

The company that i choose that used this CSR is Apple. As one of the worldโ€™s leading technology companies, Apple takes its global responsibility seriously. One aspect of its social initiatives is the environment, adopting a mission to โ€œask less of the planetโ€.
Greenpeace has named Apple the โ€œgreenest tech company in the worldโ€ for three consecutive years. Not only does the company encourage its IT partners to take full advantage of renewable energy, Apple packaging is now manufactured with 99 percent recycled paper products.

What is the VSS ?

Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) is a scheme where employees are allowed to resign voluntarily from an organization by receiving fair compensation. The purpose of organizations implementing VSS is to reduce the headcount of employees working in the organizations so that the overhead cost especially employment cost can be reduced. The employees will be given a reasonable compensation to resign from the company for each year of service.

Usually, most organizations choose not to retrench / lay-off their employees in order to reduce the headcount of employees. It is to avoid bad reputation to the organizations.

In some countries, organization may need to get approval from the government (e.g., Ministry of Human Resources; Labour Dept; etc.). One of the criteria the government considers in approving VSS is that the organization is losing money for a certain period of time or has implemented other alternative cost cutting measure before resulting to retrenchment / VSS.

What is the whistleblowing ? ๐Ÿ˜•

Whistle-blowing. also whistleblowing. uncountable noun [oft NOUN noun]Whistle-blowing is the act of telling the authorities or the public that the organization you are working for is doing something immoral or illegal. It took internal whistle-blowing and investigative journalism to uncover the rot.

Management Skills ๐Ÿ˜Ž

According to Robert L.Katz, managers are required to have three types of skills to perform their duties effectively.

1.Technical Skills
~ Is the understanding of and the proficiency in performing specific tasks. A technical skill includes the mastery of methods, techniques and equipment involved in specific functions such as engineering, manufacturing or finance. A technical skill also includes specialized knowledge, analytical ability and the competent use of tools and techniques to solve problems in a specific discipline.

2. Human Skills
~Demonstrated in the way a manager relates to workers, including the ability to motivate , facilitate, coordinate , lead , communicate and resolve conflicts. A manager with human skills allows subordinates to express themselves without fear of ridicule and encourages participation. Managers with human skills like people and this sets successful managers apart from the rest. They have good judgement for making decisions such as hiring staff or setting company policy, which are just as important as the capability of being able to get on with workers. In the global market, workforce diversity and competition for highly skilled knowledge workers has increased. Thus, human skills have become even more crucial as a management skill.

3. Conceptual Skills
~ Involve the manager's thinking, information processing and planning abilities. It involves knowing where one's department fits into the total organization and how the organization fits into the industry, the community, and the broader business and social environment. It takes into account the ability of the individuals to 'think strategically', to take the broad, long-term view. Conceptual skills are needed by all managers. They must preceive significant elements in a situation and broad conceptual patterns. For example, Microsoft, the giant software company, reflects the conceptual skills of its founder and chairman, Bill Gates.

Apart from these skills, communication skills and decision-making skills are also required of managers. Managers must know the right way to communicate with their subordinates. Decision-making skills are also important as decisions made by managers will have an impact on the organization.

Mintzberg's Managerial Roles ๐ŸŒผ

As Mintzberg says :

' The manager who only communicates or only conceives never gets anything done, while the manager who only 'does' ends up doing it all alone'.

According to Henry Mintzberg, the roles of managers can be divided into three main types ;
(a) Creating interpersonal relationship
(b) Disseminating information
(c) decision-making

Henry Mintzberg further divided these three types into ten specific roles. To conclude, he isolated three major categories of roles -interpersonal, informational and decisional. Within these categories , he identified ten specific roles - figurehead, leader, liaison, monitor, disseminator, spokesperson, enterpreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator and negotiator.

Management Functions ๐Ÿ

         THE MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS

1. Planning is the process of forming organizational goals and objectives based on a logical plan.

2. The effort to coordinate activities conducted by two or more individuals in an organization.

3. Leading or leadershop is the process of training employees on how to perform their duties in the organizatio.

4. Controlling or managerial control is management's effort to ensure that the organization is moving towards achieving its goals based on developed plans.

Level of Management ๐Ÿ€

The level of management. The organizations can generally divided into three mains levels :
(a) top-level management
(b) middle management
(c) lower-level management

The first-line managers
~ managers positioned at the lowestlevel of the management hierarchy, usually at the operational level in am organization. These managers are also known as front-line managers or operational managers. Examples of first-line managers are chemical lab supervisors in a chemistry research facility, production supervisiors in a car manufacturing factory, and clerical supervisors in a large office.

The middle-line managers
~ Position between top-line managers and first-line managers in the management hierarchy. These managers are also known as tactical managers.

Importance of Management ๐Ÿ“š

  1. It helps in Achieving Group Goals - It arranges the factors of production, assembles and organizes the resources, integrates the resources in effective manner to achieve goals. It directs group efforts towards achievement of pre-determined goals. By defining objective of organization clearly there would be no wastage of time, money and effort. Definition of Management ๐Ÿ˜

First of all, there is a lot of definition of management that I have found in my textbook. In modern management, the term management can be interpreted from several different aspects such as process, as a discipline,as individuals or as a career.
~ Management as a process involves several work activities and functions that must be followed and completed by managers in order to achieve organizational goals.

~ Management as a discipline refers to an area of knowledge that investigates ways to manage an organization. Thus, management is a subject that contains the principles, concepts, and theories of management that can be learned and applied in the management process.

~ Meanwhile, management involves individuals who lead, guide and manage the organization. Thus, management also refers to managers involved in the management process and who are responsible for ensuring all organizational activities are implemented as planned. Employees are an important resource in the organization as they ensure success by generating effectiveness and efficiency in the organization so taht accomplished goals are parallel to the organization's mission. Therefore, managers should be concerned with the well-being of employees working under them in order to achieve organizational goals, while minimizing the negative social and environmental impacts.

~ Management as a career refers to the position or rank of individuals holding the designation of managers at the various levels of management in their career progression.

But, there is are several definitions of management established by various management gurus.

Certo (1997) ~ Management is defined as a process to accomplish organizational goals by working with humans and other organizational resources.

Ivancevich et al.(1997) ~ Management as a process that is conducted by one or more individuals to coordinate the work activities of employees, capital, raw materials and technology, to achieve results of hight quality that might not be achieved by individuals working alone.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, managing is to handle or wield a tool;to undertake;to take control and take charge of a person in order to gain one's ends.

Based on the above definitions, the specific of management can be summarized as follows :

โ˜† Management is a process or activity that is conducted continuously.
โ˜†Management concentrates on achieving organizational goals.
โ˜†Management tries to achieve organizational goals with the effective and efficient cooperation of organizational resources.
